A while back I posted a notice of a fund raiser for an NGO called The Equality Effect and their project “160 Girls”. The organization is fund raising to bring a lawsuit in Kenya to bring to justice men who have been raping young girls in Kenya with impunity. The lawsuit will garner international attention and shine a spotlight on the Kenyan political officials who turn a blind eye to this violent abuse.
The first fundraiser raised about $140,000, including a huge anonymous donation. Here is a story about that event from Heather Mallick at the Toronto Star. A follow up fundraiser will be held on Tuesday November at the new offices of law firm of Fasken Martineau in downtown Toronto. It is open to everyone who wants to learn about this initiative and perhaps offer a bit of money towards the cause. There will be a silent auction, and a talk by Mercy Chidi, who runs the shelter in Kenya where the victims are often treated.
Here is the 160 Girls Project Invitation.
The event will be held at:
Tuesday, November 23, 2010
5:30 pm to 8:00 pm
hosted by Fasken Martineau Suite 2400, 333 Bay Street The Bay Adelaide Centre, Toronto
See you there.
