The University issued a press release yesterday that indicated that the strike deadline has been pushed back to November 6th (from the original Nov. 2nd date). According to the Union, this move was its initiative, because it was worried the University intended to lockout the workers soon after the November 2nd date. The University’s release also notes that the employer has proposed binding arbitration to avert a strike, but the union has rejected that proposal. The option of interest arbitration is only available if both parties agre (or if the government passes a law ordering it). The Union must believe that it can get a better deal without arbitration. Here’s a short piece from the Star about the possibility of a strike.
So for my Employment Law students, next week’s classes are a go. After that, we will have to wait and see. For my MHRM students, the Nov. 8th date is threatened. We have to see what transpires over the next week.
