There’s a good, wide ranging interview with CAW president Ken Lewenza about the challenges of bargaining in the auto industry during hard times from the Business News Network. Here it is. Note Ken’s explanation of ‘pattern bargaining’ and the union’s intent of taking wages out of competition so that one company doesn’t obtain a benefit over the other in terms of labour costs. The theory is that this then forces companies to compete on other basis, such as quality and design.
