An Evening with Professor Paul Secunda: The Amazing Story of How a Wisconsin Attack on Labour Relations Led to a Governor's Recall

by David Doorey April 5, 2012
written by David Doorey April 5, 2012

There’s a very interesting talk taking place on Monday April 16th at 6 p.m. at Ryerson. Mark it down. It’s free.
Professor Paul Secunda from Marquette Law School in Milwaukee will be discussing the events that occurred in Wisconsin over the past year, where a very right wing Governor (Scott Walker) launched an all out assault on labour rights of public sector workers.  Perhaps to his surprise, Wisconsins rebelled, senators fled the jurisdiction, and an unprecedented successful recall movement emerged, gathering over 1 million signatures seeking a recall election to remove Governor Walker and some other Republican Senators that supported the laws.
I will be introducing Paul.  Here is the flyer for the event.
Paul has described some of these crazy events in a Guest Blog here. I have also discussed the Wisconsin situation a number of others times, including here and here, with this very funny clip from Jon Stewart.
By the way, Paul is in town to teach a course on American labor law in the Osgoode LLM program in labour and employment law.  John Craig (Heenan Blaikie) and I are Directors of that program, and we are gearing up for a new cohort beginning January 2013.  If you are interested in this program, check out the flyer information here.

Contract Law folks:

Story: @KDTrey5 (Kevin Durant) demands 'fire coach Nash' or trade me! [Or else what? Durant will breach his own contract by not working? Unclear].

Could Nash argue tort of inducing breach of contract?

Could Nash/Nets argue tort of intimidation?

Discuss.

In a meeting with Nets owner Joe Tsai, Kevin Durant reiterated his trade request and informed Tsai that Tsai needs to choose between Durant or the pairing of general manager Sean Marks and coach Steve Nash, sources say.

Looks great!

I took an international labor law course at LSE/Kings College taught by Keith Ewing, Brian Bercusson, Aileen McColgan, and Paul Davies.

Incredible course. And so important.

Excited to teach my new #internationallaborlaw course critically considering how labor rights are designed & enforced. The class balances decolonial theory w/ practical experiences. My syllabus (with names redacted) below. 1/
