By way of update for my students cramming for exams next week, the union representing the TAs (CUPE 
3093) has reached a ‘tentative agreement’ with York University. This means that the union’s elected bargaining committee has agreed to take a proposed collective agreement to the union’s membership for a vote (a ‘ratification vote’). In Ontario, the law says that no collective agreement can come into effect unless a ratification vote is held and majority of voters vote to accept the deal. The vote will apparently be held on Monday. Here is the union’s chart summarizing the details of the deal.
What does this mean? Well, it means that once the ballots are tallied, we will know whether there is a new collective agreement or not. If the employees reject the proposed settlement, then either bargaining will resume, or a strike or lockout could begin.
