Canadian Labour Law Conference – Oct. 19-20, Toronto

by David Doorey September 20, 2010
written by David Doorey September 20, 2010

Once again, I will be speaking at Lancaster House’s Canadian Labour Board Law Conference on October 20th at the Sutton Place Hotel.  The conference is on October 19 and 20.  My panel is the Major Case Law Update, which takes place first thing on the second day, and with me this year are Peter Engelmann of Sack Goldblatt in Toronto and Delayne Sartison of Roper Greyell in Vancouver.  We’ve got some interesting cases from across the country to discuss.
Here is the conference website, line-up, and registration information.
abellaAlso, on the evening of Oct. 20th is the annual Bora Laskin Award Dinner.  The Bora Laskin Award is for outstanding contributions to labour law in Canada, and this years recipient is Supreme Court of Canada Justice Rosalie Abella.  Should be a great night.  See you there.

Had an interesting meeting today with an activist shareholder organization exploring ways to pressure franchisors to take greater responsibility for labor abuses in franchisees.

There’s definitely space for legal regulation on this issue as well.

Sorry to hear of the passing of Leo Gerard, former head of the Canadian and International Steelworkers' Union.

I had the pleasure of meeting Leo several times. He was one of the smartest and toughest, but also kind people in the labour relations world.
